Sinn Féin Candidate enters Election race

26 April, 2010

Mr Murphy travelled to the electoral office in Banbridge on Friday 16th April to present the nomination papers which officially mark the start of the Sinn Féin campaign in the Newry & Armagh constituency.

Speaking at the scene the Minister for Regional Development said, "Today marks the start of the official campaign. Although much behind the scenes work has been ongoing over the last number of weeks and months it is now that the election drive will really start rolling. I wish to thank all the Sinn Fein activists who will be involved in my campaign to seek re-election on May 6th and to encourage everyone to use their vote."

Prior to the submission of papers Conor launched his campaign in Newry at the public meeting of around 200 people in the Town Hall on 13th April

Martin McGuinnesss spoke at the meeting which was chaired by South Armagh councilor, Colman Burns.

"We have been running these events on an annual basis for a number of years now and there has been a consistently large attendance and participation from the public. No other political party in Ireland gives their constituents the opportunity to engage with their leadership in this manner. Any member of the public can come forward and query the work of Sinn Féin and the current strategy which we are pursuing.

"I want to commend the work of the local Sinn Féin activists who made the event such a success. It was a fantastic engagement with the Newry public and I was glad to once again meet the people of this area.

Mr McGuinness also commended the local MP Conor Murphy;

"Conor Murphy has served the people of Newry/Armagh with a commitment which is second to none. His record of delivery as a Minister in the Executive is evidence of his professionalism and dedication to public service. From the feedback at this meeting it is clear that this also recognised by the people of Newry and Armagh."
