IS THE PRICE OF OUR DIESEL A RIP-OFF? - Brady

Published: 14 October, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA for Newry and Armagh, Mickey Brady has reiterated calls made by the consumer council demanding an explanation as to why consumers are paying so much more for diesel than petrol here.

Mr. Brady said,

"The increase in diesel prices is especially affecting taxi drivers and hauliers whose expenditures on diesel are going through the roof. The recent figures released from the consumer council states that a taxi driver filling a 50 litre tank three times a week (150 litres) will face an extra cost of £959.40 per year while a haulier using 1000 litres of diesel each week will face an increased bill £533.00 per month or £6396 per year. How can people be expected to afford this?"

"This time last year petrol and diesel prices were almost the same but now there 13 pence a litre difference, I think it is time that those affected by this are given an explanation"
