Outrage at Newry NazisPublished: 15 October, 2008
Sinn Féin's Charlie Casey has spoken of his disgust at the sale of Nazi memorabilia in Newry Markets and has demanded that stall's licence is revoked immediately. The stall which featured an ' Adolf Hitler St.' sign, a bust of Hitler, nazi badges and some loyalist memorabilia was at Newry Markets on Thursday.
Mr. Casey said,
"I have placed a complaint with the Council regarding this stall and I am calling for its licence to be revoked immediately. For such items to be on display is beyond condemnation. Recently in this town there was a racist attack on a Polish family, with Nazi graffiti sprayed on the wall of their home. Racism is a significant and growing problem. Racist attacks and intimidation hassteadily increased in recent years and members of minority communities report relatively high levels of harassment."
"We need to actively work for the removal of racism from our society. This requires action as much as words. It requires adequate resources and support for ethnic minority communities and their support groups. And it requires meaningful partnerships between all sections of society"
"Sinn Fein have been campaigning for years for Immigrants Rights, we believe that everyone has a role to play in challenging racism as the number of racist attacks increases every year |
