Sinn Féin's Mickey Brady and Anthony Flynn visit Jonesborough Luncheon ClubPublished: 31 October, 2008
Sinn Féin Assembly Member and spokesperson on Older People & Welfare Rights, Mickey Brady and Councillor Anthony Flynn visited Jonesborough Luncheon Club on Tuesday to meet with the group and advise them of the benefits that they are entitled to.
During the discussion Mr. Brady spoke on the effects of fuel poverty among older people and the need for older people to obtain benefits such as the 'warm homes scheme' and pension credit.
Speaking after the meeting, Mickey Brady said,
"I wish to thank the Jonesborough Luncheon club for inviting me to speak these on important issues. The luncheon club is a fantastic group which provides social contact and informative events for older people in the Jonesborough area."
"Many older people are simply unaware of the benefits that they are entitled to. As a cold winter is approaching it is imperative that older people apply for their benefits so that they can heat their homes. Fuel poverty is widespread among the elderly in our society, it is an appalling statistic that approximately 200 -300 older people die here yearly of cold - related illnesses."
Cllr Anthony Flynn said,
"Tuesday's event proved extremely worthwhile and I look forward to similar events that are being organised for the future in South Armagh."
