COUNCILLOR APPEALS FOR VEHICLE DRIVERS TO SLOW DOWNPublished: 17 November, 2008
Newry and Mourne Councillor Pat Mc Ginn has appealed for vehicle drivers to make a conscious decision to slow down on the stretch of road along the A1 Bypass. He was speaking as the removal of Martins Lane Footbridge and the installation of temporary lights begins. The Sinn Féin Councillor who is Chairperson of the A1 Liaison Committee said that whilst it was essential that all appropriate alert and to legal Health and Safety precautions were in operation whilst works at the bridge was taking place, there was an onus on vehicle drivers to be slow down along the entire route of the road construction. "I would be seeking extra resources along that stretch of road which will alert motorists and pedestrians to all hazards and in particular slow the traffic down. It would be essential that Road Traffic Police and speed detectors are out and visible along that entire stretch" said the Councillor. He concluded by stating "Speed is one of the main causes of car crashes resulting in death, destruction and injury. There is an onus on all drivers to slow down no matter what road we are driving on |
