no water charges - Curran

Published: 23 November, 2008

Sinn Féin Council leader on Newry and Mourne Council, Brendan Curran has welcomed the decision by The Executive that there will be no water charges next year, saving the average household here around £160.
Mr. Curran said,
"At a time when families are already under mounting financial pressure Minister Conor Murphy MP, MLA said it would be unfair to add a further burden."

"Conor Murphy as Minister for Regional Development has been arguing long and hard with the British Government and particularly the British Treasury on the basis that this was a legacy of under investment that was left to the new Executive to bring our water and sewerage system up to the necessary standard and at a huge cost."

"Conor Murphy and Sinn Fein welcome this defferment saving each household approximately £160. Sinn Fein will continue to work for the delivery of an overall economic package."
