SDLP divided and confused on Leisure Centre price policy

Published: 27 November, 2008

Sinn Féin group leader on Armagh City and District Council, Cathy Rafferty, has said the SDLP conduct when it came to a vote on the pricing policy for the newly refurbished Orchard Leisure Centre, showed a party divided, confused and being led by individuals for short term political point scoring.

'The pricing policy as approved by the majority of the Council members, includes concessionary rates across a wide range including; Family Swims; Students over the age of 16; Free swimming for the over 60's and off peak concessions, as well as the usual Junior and group rates.'

'Armagh will be one of the few Council Districts in the North to allow free swimming for over 60's. I know there is some worry that Visions membership may cause some individuals concern, but in general, the concessionary rate for this is very favorable compared to other councils.'

The City Councilor continued;

'I am also pleased with the 'Buddy' scheme which will be implemented, in which an individual who accompanies a disabled person will avail of concessionary rates.'

'I believe this policy is fair and balanced, bearing in mind there is no duty on any council to offer free or concessionary rates, and we have done well to cater for so many. We have a duty to all the citizens of Armagh City and District to provide the best facilities we can at an affordable price, I am aware of retired and unemployed people who are paying far greater prices at other establishments, than those for which this facility will be available. We need to monitor the situation, and, if needs be, review the pricing policy if there any complaints in six months or so.'

'I am disappointed that the SDLP members on the council did not support the pricing policy. Although, I believe those who abstained were pressured into following short sighted colleagues who are hoping to make some sort of political gain out of this. It is ironic that in previous meetings and discussions on this issue, SDLP members have in the past supported the rationale of the 'Visions' membership and proposed pricing policies. Why they have changed their minds suddenly only they can answer.'
