Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy, has welcomed Roads Service's progress on investment totaling £5.8million in the Armagh City and District Council area this year.
Speaking ahead of tonight's meeting between Roads Service and Armagh City and District Council, the Minister said:"Roads Service is continuing work on the progression of the design for two major schemes to ease traffic congestion in and around the city of Armagh. The Armagh North and West Link Road is due to commence within the next five years subject to the level of funding available and land vesting etc. The Armagh East Link scheme has a preferred alignment selected and junction options have been completed. It is hoped this project will be completed within the next ten years.
"Other schemes which have already been completed this year include
B111 Corcreevey Road
, Richill. This scheme has significantly improved sightlines for drivers emerging from
Tirnascobe Road
also the scheme has included carriageway widening and improved visibility on the
Corcreevey Road
as well as combining a new footway link to the existing bus stop."
At the meeting Road Service's Strategic Road Improvements Manager Leslie McCullough welcomed the continued investment in local transport and safety measures in the Armagh Council area. These include traffic calming schemes, measures to assist cyclists and pedestrians and a programme of school travel and safety projects.
Mr McCullough said: "Roads Service faces some very significant challenges over the next few years as it deals with the ongoing needs for road maintenance, while progressing a demanding programme of strategic road improvements. We are also contributing to the work being led by the Department of the Environment, on the implementation of decisions arising from the Review of Public Administration, so that changes to our structure or working arrangements can be planned and implemented smoothly.
"Despite these challenges, Roads Service will continue to concentrate on scheme delivery in the Armagh Council area. We will minimise the disruption that will arise from our works and we will give motorists advance warning of road works through signage and information prior to works. There will also be updated information on our website and radio traffic reports."
