House Fires Increase by 50% over Christmas Period - McDonald

Sinn Féin's Packie McDonald has urged the public to be particularly mindful of the dangers of house fires over the Christmas period.

Cllr. McDonald said,

"I am appealing for everyone to be particularly vigilant over the coming weeks. Christmas is a 'high risk' period for fires in the home, due to the widespread use of lights and candles, as well as increasing alcohol consumption. Indeed house fires increase by up to 50% over the Christmas period."

"The most important thing to do is install a minimum of two smoke alarms in your home, if you have not already done so. "

"At Christmas, people should also guard against the dangers posed by alcohol. Recent research indicates that alcohol was a pre-fire factor in almost 40% of fire deaths in the last two years".

The Sinn Féin Councillor also outlined the dangers of Christmas trees in relation to the causes of house fires.

"The Irish National Safety Council advises that real Christmas trees should be placed securely in a sturdy base filled with water, as metal stands cause trees to dry out and become flammable. They also advise that if you are choosing an artificial tree that you should make sure it has been pre-treated to increase flame resistance. Keep the tree away from candles, heaters fire places or other heat sources.

"It is also important that you check all connections on Christmas lights and ensure that all electrical work, such as plugs, are carried out by a competent person. If you are using lights from previous years, examine the wiring to ensure they are not worn. If in doubt, throw them out. Do not overload sockets. Unplug all Christmas lights and appliances before leaving your home or going to bed at night."

The Sinn Féin councillor also advised that people should be careful when using candles, keeping them out of the reach of children and pets.

"Always use an appropriate candleholder placed on a stable, heat resistant surface and extinguish candles before going to bed or leave the house.

Cllr. McDonald concluded by wishing everyone in the Newry and Mourne a Happy Christmas
