Sinn Féin MLA for Newry and Armagh, Mickey Brady has congratulated the Abbey Christian Brothers Grammar, Newry after the school had 8 science projects which made it to the final of the young scientist exhibition. The exhibition is an all-Ireland competition with a record 1,616 projects entered for the 2009.
Mickey Brady, a former student at the school said,
"The staff and pupils at the Abbey should be extremely proud of their success so far with 8 out of the 28 Northern entries coming from their school. I would like to congratulate all the students and teachers, for the time and effort that they have spent in putting together their entries. I would also like to wish good luck to those teams who are now competing at the final in the RDS."
The Minister for Education should be commended as every county in the North is represented at the exhibition this year after a dramatic increase of 25% in the number of projects entered. This is certainly due to Minister's Department increasing the budget available for schools to enter this event. Over half of schools from the North that entered have made it through to the final, well above the average qualification rate of 30%."
