RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP ESSENTIAL-COST TO NEWRY AND MOURNE RATEPAYER OVER £120,000 PER YEARPublished: 28 January, 2009
Sinn Féin Newry and Mourne Councillor Pat Mc Ginn has said that responsible dog ownership is essential after it was revealed that the cost borne by the Environmental Health Department to deal with the issue of unlicensed dogs is over £120,000 per year.
"Our Council staff are impounding approximately fifteen dogs per week. 4000 responsible dog owners licence their pets every year, that is commendable and to be welcomed. However the latest dog impounding figures shows that irresponsible dog-ownership is a huge and costly problem. Irresponsible dog-raising not only causes health and safety problems and disturbs neighbourhoods, but it also neglects the rights of the pets "
"The Council have been told that it costs approximately £120,000 per year to deal with all the issues involved. This is a huge and totally unacceptable burden on ratepayers. Health and Safety regarding stray and illegal dogs is also another key issue of concern. Dog fouling in particular is a persistent and growing problem which all dog owners including those of licensed dogs need to be aware of". The Sinn Féin Councillor concluded by stating that the aim for all dog lovers was working towards a day when all dogs could enjoy a happy life, free from the threat of unnecessary destruction. "It is essential that we continue to promote responsible dog ownership through campaigns and education work. By doing this we can reach not only this generation of dog owners, but the next as well, to encourage responsible dog ownership for years to come. However people should be aware of their responsibilities and the general public need to know just exactly what irresponsible dog ownership is costing this council |
