Sinn Féin's Charlie Casey has said that greater parking facilities need to be provided for taxi drivers in Newry. Cllr Casey was speaking after DOE roads agreed to convene a meeting on 18th March to address the issue.

Cllr Casey said,

"I requested that this meeting was arranged after speaking to a number of taxi drivers who were concerned that there is not enough taxi parking facilities in Newry. The taxi drivers were concerned that they are being constantly moved on by traffic wardens even there is not enough spaces to move on to."

"These people are simply trying to earn a living and have a right to so. However, this is becoming increasingly difficult due to the lack of proper provision for taxis"

"There are currently of 200 taxi drivers in Newry and due to the economic downturn with the construction industry coming to a halt, more and more people are taking up this occupation."

Cllr Casey has arranged through city centre partnership to meet DOE to get proper taxi rank provision by next few months and stated,

"Delegations of taxi drivers will be able to attend meeting to state their case"
