COUNCILLOR CALLS FOR ACTION ON COUNCIL DINNER TABLES COSTSPublished: 24 February, 2009
Newry and Mourne Sinn Féin Councillor Michael Ruane has stated that there needs to be a practical and rigid policy adapted by Newry and Mourne Council in relation to the purchase of tables at external events.
"Whilst we as a Council are expected to ensure that our expected Civic duties are carried out to the full, the fact that dinner tables and associated costs add up to nearly £10,000 per year, has certainly raised quite a few eyebrows. There is also a problem that many of these tables booked by our Council cannot be filled, and we end up paying officers overtime and travelling to go to them!"
"In many other councils throughout the north, many Councils do not take tables but give donations instead. It is important that our Council plays its role in promoting civic pride and responsibility but there needs to be a practical and rigid policy adapted by the Council in relation to the purchase of tables at external events. Councillors need to practice a mature and sensible attitude to such requests".
The Councillor concluded by stating that Newry and Mourne Council needs all Councillors working together to ensure that the vast majority of Council spend is focused on services and the retention of front line staff.
"Networking and promoting this area has its part to play, but times are tight and we must ensure that effective and efficient services are maintained |
