COUNCILLOR EXTREMELY ALARMED BY NEWRY CIGARETTE UNDERAGE SALE REVELATIONS

Published: 24 February, 2009

Newry City Sinn Féin Councillor Charlie Casey has stated that he shares the deep concern of many after it was revealed by the Council's Environmental Health Department that twenty one out of forty six shops served a fourteen year old girl cigarettes.

"These revelations are extremely disturbing and I would appeal to all shopkeepers to ensure that this type of practice ends immediately. Another worrying concern is the availability of alcohol to young children and I am aware that the appropriate authorities are pursuing such type of "test purchase" operations to identify those guilty of serving underage".

The Councillor concluded by appealing to all to recognise their legal and indeed moral obligations.
