Sinn Féin MP and MLA Conor Murphy has said that Sinn Féin it totally opposed to the detention of suspects beyond the existing seven days.

Mr Murphy said,

"If there is evidence that an individual has committed a crime then that person should be charged and the evidence should be put before the courts. However, if there is no evidence then that person should be released.

"It is vital that we continue to build confidence in policing and persist with the good work of recent years. In order for this to happen it is crucial that the PSNI demonstrate a willingness to uphold the highest standards of human rights protections."

"Regardless of who is involved or what they are suspected of doing, Sinn Féin have consistently opposed the detention of suspects beyond the existing seven days. Our representatives have repeated this position to the British government in recent days.
