CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL EVENTS TO MARK 93RD ANNIVERASY OF EASTER RISING

Published: 30 March, 2009

Mickey Brady, MLA for Newry and Armagh announced plans for a series of events to mark the 93rd anniversary of the Easter Rising. Speaking at a specially convened meeting of the Easter Commemoration Committee, Mr Brady stated,

'This year sees us commemorating not only the Easter Rising but 50 years of the Cuban Revolution and 70 years of the ending of the Irish Brigade's involvement in the war against Fascism in Spain. With democracy now entrenched in Spain and more and more South and Central American countries following the Democratic and Socialist path of Cuba and Venezuela there is much to celebrate. Here in the Six Counties Republicans struggle to create democracy and equality out of 70 years of a neo-colonial mess."

"On the 8th April in the Arts Centre in Newry, Sinn Fein will host a lecture by Mick Halpenny, National Industrial Officer and Head of SIPTU's Legal Affairs Department. Mick will be joined by Leo Green, National Political Development Officer of Sinn Fein. Mick will discuss the role of the Labour Movement in the years leading up to the Rising and finishing with Labour's input into the Democratic Programme of the First Dail in 1919. Leo will discuss the relevance of the historic events of 1916 in today's world and their impact on modern Republicanism and Socialism."

"On Easter Sunday in Bellini's Restaurant the Prominent Traditional Musician and TV broadcaster Tiarnan O Duinnchinn will give a recital of traditional music and will discuss the significance of the Culture Revival to the men and women of 1916. He will be joined by the prominent Co. Monaghan Musician, educationalist and uileann pipe maker Eamonn Curran. The recital will take place at 2.30 pm after the Easter Commemoration march.

Sinn Fein hopes that many Newry people will make a special effort to commemorate these historic events and extends a hearty cead mlíe failte to all'
