Illegal dumping concerns raised

Published: 10 April, 2009

Sinn Féin Councillor Mary Doyle has said that serious concerns have been raised following a number of illegal dumping incidents over the past week.

Cllr. Doyle said,

"I was recently contacted by a constituent who was very concerned after discovering two dead animals while walking with her family on the

Carrickatuke Viewpoint Road

.

"Not only is this a threat to health but it is a very distressing find, and the result of unscrupulous farmers who disregard the regulations for the disposal of dead animals."

"However, the second discovery was even more sinister, mounds of yellow and orange powder were piled up in two places along the side of the road. A drum containing the same powder was also found at another location on the road."

Cllr Doyle explained that she immediately contacted Environmental Health and an Officer came out to inspect the sites. As the animals are on Forestry property the officer contacted them to have them removed……???

"It was not known what the powder was, so it cannot be known how dangerous it was. The officer contacted a specialist clean up company to take samples and identify the powder, and begin a clean up operation of the area."

Cllr Doyle concluded,

"The dumping of this unknown powder is the despicable act of someone who has no regard for other people or the environment. The rate payer in Armagh now has to foot the bill for this careless act. Carrickatuke is a beautiful but remote spot and I would ask anybody who is aware of any dumping to report it to the Armagh Council immediately
