Newry Sinn Féin host Easter lecturePublished: 10 April, 2009
As part of this year's Easter commemorations Newry Sinn Féin hosted a lecture in the Arts centre to discuss the importance of the labour movement in republicanism. The panel for the event featured Mick Halpenny, National Industrial Officer and Head of SIPTU's Legal Affairs Department and former hunger striker National Political Development Officer for Sinn Fein Leo Green.
Sinn Féin Assembly member Mickey Brady said that the event was a huge success.
"The event proved to be extremely popular and informative, as both young and old were in attendance."
"Mick Halpenny gave a very comprehensive lecture of the rise of the labour movement in Ireland while Leo spoke passionately about how relevant the 1916 proclamation is in Ireland today."
"I look forward to further events in the future."
Mr Brady concluded by stating,
"James Connolly's words are as relevant today as they ever were - "The cause of labour is the cause of Ireland, the cause of Ireland is the cause of Labour."
