Removal of Lifeguard services could result in loss of life - Curran

Sinn Féin Councillor Brendan Curran has said that the cutbacks on lifeguard services at the Cranfield beach area will have serious consequences and could result in the loss of life.

Councillor Curran who is also aroyal life saving society trainermade the comments following the removal of the service over Easter weekend.

Councillor Curran said,

"Easter weekend is among the busiest times of year for beach users yet this crucial service is not available."

"I dread to think of the consequences of young children using that beach unsupervised."

"While the reduction of Council expenditure may be necessary due to the rates lobbied for by the Unionists and SDLP, to what extent are we willing to cut corners?"

"I don't think there is a single person in Newry and Mourne that would argue that this essential service is cut while all expenses paid junkets to Russia for some councillors are acceptable."
