Velodrome should be constructed in Newry - Curran

Sinn Féin Councilor Brendan Quinn has said that the proposed velodrome should be constructed in Newry City.

Councilor Curran said,

"I think that the velodrome would be a fantastic boost for this area,

"More importantly however it would also be a fantastic boost for the sport which I don't believe it would be if awarded to a less accessible area.

"Newry would attract many more people as it is intercity on the main route between Dublin and Belfast.

Cllr Curran added that it was very important to note that the rate payers of Newry and in the future Newry and Down Council would be paying for the huge shortfall which will be needed to finance this facility on an ongoing basis.

"I believe a private developer is best placed to make this work by supplementing other attractions.

"The Newry bid should be the only bid still standing as Belfast was too late and the other area is no longer intending to build it where it was originally proposed

"I think the Newry application is the only valid application.

"I am also disappointed that our Council is not affording this project as much support as it could of.

"While I wish the other areas the best of luck in its bid I think that this facility must now go to Newry as other applications were flawed"
