Curran calls on more schools to host DPP eventsPublished: 27 April, 2009
Sinn Féin District Policing Partnership member Brendan Curran has called on schools in Newry and Mourne to respond to invitations from the DPP to host talks with their pupils.
Cllr Curran was speaking after taking part in a DPP delegation at St. Josephs High.
"The recent talk with the pupils at St. Josephs was hugely successful and a great opportunity to engage with young people.
"I wish to thank both the school for hosting the event but also the young people for attending and for taking such an active part in the lively discussions.
"As ex-pupil of the school I enjoyed the chance to return and meet young people who were in the same position I was when I attended; uncertain of what to do in life and unsure what the future may hold.
Cllr Curran outlined the problems that anti-social behaviour causes for communities but also for young people who may become involved in such activity.
"I explained to the pupils how young people drinking on the street or being rowdy can terrify elderly residents even if it is not their intention to do so."
The former political prisoner also outlined the horrors of being imprisoned so that the group could understand the seriousness of such an ordeal.
The talk from the various representatives was followed by a lively question and answer session.
Cllr Curran said,
"The question and answer session was particularly enjoyable and beneficial. It is this type of activity that is the real point of the DPP. The DPP should be engaging with all communities particularly the younger generation.
Cllr Curran concluded by calling on the other schools that have not yet responded to invites from the DPP to do so |
