Councillor calls on Council to value its workers

Newry Sinn Féin councillor Brendan Curran has said that he was very disappoint with the recent results of an evaluation of council workers which in many cases did not enhance the lot of our first class council workforce.
Cllr Curran said,
"Many of our workers in Newry and Mourne Council are on the lowest rung of their pay-scale ladder and some are only just above the minimum wage. Indeed some receive benefits to supplement their wages."
"While some of our workers did do well out of our evaluation other didn't and i feel this is very unfair tour workers who do a great job.
"Some get up during the night to clean the council for the rest of us to come in the next day. These people don't receive the decent remuneration that they deserve.
"I have always been critical of the pay that our council workers receive compared to those in Derry and Belfast
Instead of giving them glass bowls when they retire the coucnil should give them a decent wage while they're here."
