Traffic calming measures needed on Carrowbane Road - McCreesh

Published: 30 May, 2009

Sinn Féin Councillor Jimmy Mc Creesh has called for traffic calming measures on the Carrowbane Road, Belleek. The long serving community activist noted that it was an overriding priority to have this issue resolved as a matter of urgency before someone is injured or killed. The Fews representative revealed that he was meeting the roads authority in the coming days and that he would seek to address this outstanding issue.

Mc Creesh commented "This road is frequented by school children from St. Brigids, Drumiily. They walk to and from school everyday on a road that effectively has absolutely no traffic control or calming measures. I fear that this situation is an accident waiting to happen. It is wholly unacceptable that young children should have to make such a potentially perilous journey day after day. Something must be done to ensure that the proper standards of safety are enforced on this road and I intend to get this issue resolved as a matter of urgency. Parents have contacted me again and again raising concern over this particular issue, and it is quite clear that there is a very genuine and palpable fear that someone could get very seriously injured if this issue is not addressed properly."

Mc Creesh concluded by calling on the parents of the children involved to ensure that their children are educated in road use. He added that there is a particular imperative on road users to be cautious when travelling along the Carrowbane Road as it is noted for the volume of school children walking the road
