ROADS SERVICE TO INVEST £7.4MILLION IN ARMAGH AREA

Sinn FéinRegional Development MinisterConor Murphy announced a £7.4million investment for the Armagharea this year.

Speaking ahead of tonight's meeting between Roads Service and Armagh City and District Council, the Minister said "Schemes which will be taken forward in the Armagh City and District Council areathis year include the B3, Castleblaney Road with the Derrynoose Road, Keady which will provide a right turning lane and improved visibility at this busy junction. Similar works providing a right turning lane and improved visibility measures will progress on the A29, Keady Road, at the junction with Rock Road Armagh."

In addition to the schemes that will be delivered in 2009/10, the Minister also made reference to the development work that was being undertaken on strategic road improvement schemes. He said: "I particularly welcome the ongoing design work on the Armagh North and West link scheme which will outline a new 'out of town' corridor in the preparation for this progressing through the statutory procedures."

Mr Murphy welcomed the road maintenance schemes progressed in the Armagh area last year. He said this year's increased allocation for structural maintenance would allow a larger number of resurfacing schemes to proceed on local roads this financial year.

Road Service's Acting Divisional Roads Manager Bertie Ellisonwelcomed the planned investment in local transport and safety measures in the Armagh City and District Council area, which includes traffic calming, collision remedial, pedestrian measures, cycling measures and safer routes to schools.

Roads Service has also been in consultation with local government representatives on matters arising from the Review of Public Administration. These included the details of functions to be transferred to local government in 2011 and the arrangements to allow the new councils to influence roads programmes.

Mr Ellison highlighted some of the schemes already completed in 2008/09. These included providing a new footway and integrating traffic calming measures on the B115, Cathedral Road, Armagh. In addition to this numerous resurfacing schemes were completed within the Armagh Council area.
