Published: 12 June, 2009
Newry and Armagh Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan has welcomed an announced by Minister for Education Caitríona Ruane that there is to be a new Irish-medium nursery unit in Armagh. The Minister announced two units 1 in Armagh and 1 in Derry which will replace existing funded playgroups and will each provide 26 places for children in their immediate pre-school year.
Mr Boylan said,
"I very much welcome the announcement that Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has approved the establishment of Irish-medium nursery units at the Christian Brothers' Primary School in Armagh.
"Research shows the importance of pre-school experience for children. Those who receive it are more sociable and independent and learn more quickly when they enter primary school than those who have not.
Making the announcement Minister Ruane said,
"I believe in giving our children the best possible start as learners. Effective pre-school education helps the development of children and improves their social and communication skills, all of which is vital to helping them achieve. These new nursery units will help set the foundations for a successful school life through the medium of Irish. The earlier children begin to develop skills in a second language, the more opportunities are open to them."
