CLLR. BURNS GIVES THUMBS UP TO FLOOD PREVENTION MEASURES AT CREGGAN BRIDGE.

Published: 17 June, 2009

Sinn Fein Councillor Colman Burns has given a cautious welcome to flood improvements by Roads Service at Creggan Bridge. Cllr. Burns explained, "Over the past number of years, after heavy rain, there has been a tendency for rainwater to back up at Creggan Bridge causing deep flooding on the

Newry Road

. The road at the bridge has always been difficult to negotiate and full concentration is needed due to the fact that the bridge is narrow and also because there is traffic joining the

Newry Road

from

Donaldsons Road

. This periodical flooding added to the dangers and heaped more difficulties on to motorists at this part of the very busy

Newry Road

.

The flooding was caused by a rainwater pipe that was continuously becoming clogged up with leaves and various types of debris and was no longer fit to manage the water that gathers at this low part of the road during heavy spells of rain."

Councillor Burns continued, "As Councillors, we have brought the problem to the attention of roads authorities on many occasions and highlighted the added dangers caused by the flooding. Roads workers were often to be seen unclogging the pipe and releasing the rainwater into Creggan River.

Thankfully, roads authorities have finally come up with a more permanent solution to the problem when they put in a new pipe with a much bigger diameter. Hopefully this work will have the desired effect and one problem will be solved and consigned to the history books.

Sinn Fein Councillors are very aware of the many other shortcomings on the B30 Newry to

Crossmaglen Road

. We will continue to lobby the Road service in a bid to bring this very busy road up to the proper standard required for the ever- increasing traffic."
