Local MP's 'main priority' is the retention of jobs in Newry/ArmaghPublished: 24 June, 2009
Amid fears that more than 100 jobs are at risk at a Newry call centre after the loss of a major contract from Irish pay-TV company Setanta, local Sinn Féin MP Conor Murphy has said that he will fight for every job in the region and that the retention of jobs in Newry/Armagh is his main priority.
Mr Murphy said,
"The news of Setanta's closure follows shortly after it was announced that the Newry branch of Teleperformance, had lost the contract from BetEire Flow which also threatened jobs in the company. This is worrying indeed, not only for those workers involved but also the remaining staff.
"During these times of uncertainty Teleperformance needs to definitely state the long term future of its centre in Newry so that the work force can make informed choices about their own future plans.
Mr Murphy concluded by stating,
"Sinn Féin will fight for every worker in this area, at this time of economic downturn every job is of vital importance, the retention of local jobs is now my main priority."
