Inaugural Gerard Fearon Band Competition held at Mol an Óige youth weekendPublished: 27 June, 2009
The first Gerard Fearon band competition was held today (27th June) at the Tí Chulainn centre Mullach Bán during the Mol an Óige youth camping weekend. The Crossmaglen and Cullyhanna flute bands took part in the event which commemorated the young man who was tragically killed in a car accident.
Due to the high standard met by the two bands, the judges decided that (for the first year only) the prize should be awarded to both.
Speaking after presenting the trophy along with Gerard's brother Peter, Sinn Féin MP Conor Murphy said,
"Both bands played fantastically today making it impossible to judge a clear winner. It takes a lot of time, commitment and practice to be a member of these bands and I pay tribute to all those involved.
Mr Murphy also commended the organisers of the youth weeked,
"The youth weekend was a fantastic initiative by Mol an Óige. It is a great community group and I would encourage all young people from South and Armagh and Newry to join it |
