Curran welcome moves towards new Irish medium newspaper

Sinn Féin Councillor Brendan Curran has welcomed the news that Foras na Gaeilge are now advertising for tenders for a new weekly Irish language newspaper.
Cllr Curran said:
"I welcome the news that Foras na Gaeilge have advertised for tenders for a weekly Irish language newspaper. There has been an Irish language newspaper in existence in one form or another in this country for over 100 years.
"Like most speakers of the language I was sorely disappointed at the recent closure of Foinse. I am hopeful now that whoever gets this contract can deliver a service for all Irish speakers across the island, north and south, Galltacht and Gaeltacht.
"For the longer term, I think that Foras na Gaeilge should adopt a strategy which would create an Irish language news service, which would be both in print and online would equal the high standards of Nuacht TG4 and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.
"It must present national and international affairs through our unique prism as Irish speakers.
"I would encourage Foras to enter quickly into discussions with the main Irish language bodies and with other news providers about developing the best and most comprehensive and professional way forward.
"This however will undoubtedly take a longer period. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing this new weekly hopefully on the shelves before the Oireachtas comes to Letterkenny in the autumn
