Large quantity of asbestos dumped on motorway slip road

Published: 13 August, 2009

Sinn Féin councillor Packie McDonald has warned of the dangers of asbestos after a large quantity of the substance was found dumped on the motorway near Killean, South Armagh.

The Slieve Gullion councillor reported the discovery to environmental services.

Cllr McDonald said,

"I am extremely concerned at the discovery of such a large amount of asbestos on this very busy road.

"The people responsible for dumping the waste here have shown a complete disregard for the safety of the people of this area.

"The potential dangers of asbestos are widely known and the inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause serious illnesses, including malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis

Cllr McDonald concluded by stating that the removal of this waste will be billed to the taxpayer as the cleanup must be done by a specialised team
