Newry should host the all-Ireland Fleadh - Sinn FéinPublished: 30 August, 2009
"The time is right for Newry City to make a bid to host the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann". Those were the words of Sinn Fein Councillor Colman Burns as he congratulated everyone from the District who competed in this year's Fleadh, held in Tullamore Co. Offaly.
"I have been attending the All-Ireland Fleadh since 1987 but this year, I think, was very special in that there was a noticeable rise in the number of people from our District, both junior and senior, that were competing for All-Ireland honours.
"I would like to congratulate those who were successful and indeed those who just missed out on honours. . We must remember that all competitors are already champions having won through from their provinces.
"Competition is always very stiff at this level but everyone from this area done us very proud and was great ambassadors for Newry and Mourne."
"Over the last number of year's places such as, Kilkenny, Sligo, Listowel, Ballina, Enniscorthy, Clonmel, Letterkenny and Tullamore have all been successful in getting the opportunity to host the Fleadh.
"Newry is a young vibrant city well known for its warm welcome and hospitality. Our district is steeped in a strong tradition of storytelling, music, and song and dance. We have all the ingredients to run a very successful Fleadh and reap the huge economic benefits that come about when 250,000 people descend on a district for a weekend.
"Cavan town will host next years Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann and I wish them all the very best. I know that they will leave no stone unturned to ensure that everything goes according to plan and everyone will once again enjoy the music song and dance while Cavan will be grateful for the positive economic benefits.
Ex Mayor Councillor Burns finished,
"I think Newry City has just as much to offer as any of the above towns and I think the work should begin now to put in a strong bid for the Fleadh in the coming years."
His party colleague, Anthony Flynn, agreed and paid particular tribute to the Jonesborough band who became all-Ireland champions at this years Fleadh.
"I want to commend all those involved with Jonesborough's success at the Fleadh. They have brought great pride to our community and should congratulated on their success."
