Erosion of river bank raised by MLA

Published: 5 September, 2009

Local MLA, Cathal Boylan, is to raise the concerns of parents and cyclists regarding the erosion of the river bank along the cycle path between Nursery Road and Killylea Road in Armagh with the Council and the Rivers Agency.

'This well used path is used by cyclists and pedestrians on a daily basis. Many parents bring young children along the path as it is a scenic and tranquil route running along the banks of the Callan river' said the Sinn Féin representative.

'Unfortunately, probably due to the persistent heavy rain fall we have endured in the last few months, flooding has left one particular section of the bank in a precarious state. It is natural erosion caused by rising water, but at the narrowest point, there is only about 2 foot of bank remaining. It would be very easy for a child to fall into the river at this point. I am contacting the Council and Rivers Agency to make them aware of the problem and hope they will take remedial action as soon as possible
