Vandals cause fire at Murphy Crescent, Newry

Published: 6 September, 2009

Sinn Féin Deputy Mayor of Newry & Mourne Charlie Casey has said that a fire outside a house in

Murphy Crescent

in Newry had the potential to kill if it had not been for prompt action of the fire service.

Cllr Casey said,

"Yesterday's fire in

Murphy Crescent

had the potential to cause severe injuries or even kill if it had not been for the prompt actions of the local fire service.

"It seems that this fire was started deliberately. I would urge those responsible to think of the consequences of their actions and refrain from this type of activity.

"Thankfully no one was injured in the blaze as no one was in the home at the time. Although I understand that the house closest to the fire is occupied by a young mother and her son.

"This is an area occupied mostly by pensioners and older people. These people deserve to feel safe in their homes - free from this hooliganism.

"I would urge anyone with any information regarding this incident to contact the relevant authorities."
