Residents fears due to anti-social behaviour in the Meadow - Mathers

Published: 10 September, 2009

The Hughes/Grant/Watters Sinn Féin in Derrybeg and the Meadow has received a number of complaints regarding anti-social behaviour in and around the community centre in the Meadow.

Sinn Féin councillor Marian Mathers said that there is a fear that the shop units will have to relocate due to loss of trade.

"I have spoken to local people who feel extremely intimidated when going to the shops at the community centre. Some have said that they received a tirade of abuse from young people who congregate at the front of the shops.

"Others have said that footballs were kicked against their cars when they parked near the shops.

"I don't think that these young people realise the damage they are causing.

"The shopping complex in

Killeavy Road

serves a lot of people from that area and is an essential community facility.

"There is a real danger that retailers in the complex could consider moving because of the ongoing problems. This facility is the envy of other areas and it would be a shame if they were forced to close due to anti-social behaviour.

"I would call on all parents to ensure that they know the where their children are at all times and ask their children not to use the complex as a kick about area.

"There is lots of space for football in the all weather facility on the line and I would encourage youngsters to use this area rather than annoying residents who rely on the shops on a daily basis".
