Brady and de Brún address Irvinestown Age Concern event

Published: 13 October, 2009

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún was in Irvinestown on Friday to address members of Trendsetters, the very active local branch of Age Concern on the life and work of an MEP and on Europe and Older People.

She was accompanied by Mickey Brady MLA who spoke about current issues at the Assembly.

Ms de Brún said:

"I was very impressed by the range of activities organised by Trendsetters, by the lovely atmosphere in the Bawnacre centre in Irvinestown and by the interest shown in the range of EU issues we discussed.

"As an active MEP, it is important to listen to the real needs of citizens. The need for an adequate pension, rural post offices and the rights of older people in relation to health, education and transport services have all been issues that I have put a focus on during the past 5 years.

"Our lively discussion in Irvinestown also covered consumer protection, the environment and the price farmers get for their produce as well as free transport for older people, and PEACE funding. The Trendsetters group were very interested in how the EU works and how decisions are made.

"My colleague Mickey Brady MLA spoke about current topics in the Assembly while I outlined developments at EU level.

"One hugely significant EU directive some years ago outlawed unjustified age discrimination in employment and vocational training. Now, the next important stage of EU equality legislation will deal with equality of treatment in access to goods and services, including the right of older people to finance, insurance, and adequate health services."
