Whitecross vandalism condemned - McCreesh

Published: 1 November, 2009

Sinn Fein Fews Councillor Jimmy Mc Creesh has condemned the latest attack on public transport services in the Whitecross area. The local representatives comments came in the wake of an attack which resulted in several windows of an Ulsterbus being broken in the area last week. Mc Creesh vented his anger at those responsible, highlighting the fact that the evening bus service in the area had been withdrawn from Tuesday to after Halloween by Translink.

"This kind of wanton vandalism has no place in this community. I have been inundated with calls from concerned community members, especially older people who avail of free transport and who view this service as their primary means of getting about. There are many people who are totally dependent on this service and now owing to the inconsiderate and downright dangerous actions of a narrow minded few they are being deprived of it. The situation has deteriorated to the point where Translink were no longer willing to risk further damage to their vehicles so decided to withdraw the service over the Halloween period. The perpetrators of this latest act need to take a good, hard look at themselves and start thinking of their community. Their sinister notion of fun has penalised the wider community."

Mc Creesh continued by stating that those responsible for this type of activity must realise that their actions result in severe inconvenience and are a detriment to others. He urged Translink to ensure that this service returns to normality as soon as possible. He urged the wider community to take ownership of this problem and to collectively seek a viable resolution to it.
