Elderly man seriously assaulted during robbery

Published: 2 November, 2009

Sinn Féin MLA, Mickey Brady, has condemned the attack and robbery of a man in the Meadow, Newry.

Mr. Brady said;

"I understand that the man was attacked with a hammer recently when he answered the door in the early hours of the morning.

"He has subsequently been hospitalised due to the injuries he received while his home was robbed.

"A number of firearms were taken from the property, this is of great concern.

"I am calling on people to be extra vigilant and ensure that their homes are properly secured both at night and during the day.

"I would ask people who see strangers acting suspiciously to either challenge them or ring the PSNI. I would also warn elderly people not to allow strangers into their home and to ask for proper identification which all bone fide agencies carry.

"The local Sinn Féin cumann in the area are currently organising an event whereby elderly people are advised about safety in the home by a number of groups."
