Condemnation of gun attack in Crossmaglen - Sinn Féin

Crossmaglen Sinn Féin councillor Terry Hearty said that those responsible for the gun attack on Crossmaglen barracks will achieve nothing for the people of South Armagh. Cllr Hearty said the group who carried out the attack want to bring South Armagh back to a conflict which no one wants.

"The tiny splinter group responsible for the attack is pursuing a militarist agenda. They are attempting, unsuccessfully, to justify their own existence at the expense of the people of this area.

"They totally divorced from republicans throughout Ireland and abroad. Their actions will achieve nothing for the people of South Armagh. They seem to want to drag our community back to a conflict which no one here wants."

"Demilitarisation has taken place in south Armagh as a key part of the Peace Process. The British Army has been removed from our community and their spyposts have been closed.

"Remilitarisation is what these groups want. They should not get what they want. These groups will not succeed in their attempts to derail the Peace Process, which has the full support of the overwhelming majority of people in Crossmaglen and south Armagh."
