Published: 21 January, 2010

Newry and Mourne Fews area Sinn Féin Councillor Turlough Murphy has welcomed the proposals by Roads Service to place traffic calming road humps along the

Green Road

to Bessbrook Chapel corner.

Cllr Murphy said;

"The local community has pursued this issue for many years and this announcement will please many" said the Councillor who confirmed that maps with details of proposals had been submitted to Council."

Cllr Murphy also stated that the initial response from residents living along the road was positive but that issues such as the proposed number of road humps to be placed on the road and the actual positioning of them may need to be discussed.

"I will ask that copies of the proposals are available for examination, perhaps in the Library, Community Centre and Council Office in Monaghan Row, so that local people can give an input if they feel the need"

Fews area Sinn Féin Councillor Pat Mc Ginn echoing his colleague's welcome of the proposals said that the stretch of road had a detailed and well recorded accident history.

"Anything that adds to the safety and well being of pedestrians, motorists and passengers is to be welcomed" said the Councillor who confirmed that he would continue to lobby for appropriate traffic calming measures to be placed along the nearby Chancellors Road and in the Highstreet area.

"Intensive lobbying is ongoing. In particular the major new road infrastructures will have I feel a major impact on the

Chancellors Road

locality and it is essential that vehicle activity is monitored. There is increased pedestrian activity along Highstreet and it is essential that issues like the creation of a full length footpath along that stretch of road are investigated."
