Newry and Armagh Republicans prepare for huge hunger strike commemoration in Derry.Published: 12 August, 2008
Newry and Armagh Republicans prepare for huge hunger strike commemoration in Derry.
This Sunday (17th August) will see the first national hunger strike commemoration outside of Belfast. This year's venue will be Derry, but the annual event is set to take place in a different location in Ireland every year henceforth.
Local MP Conor Murphy has called on all local republicans to travel to the Rally.
"I would call on everyone who can, to travel to Derry this Sunday to commemorate the sacrifices of the ten men who gave their lives on hunger strike in 1981 and also to all those men and women who endured the hardships of the blanket protest in order to achieve political status for republican prisoners."
He added,
"There is a fantastic list of events organised in Derry this weekend, including many of the most well known republican bands playing in different venues throughout the city. Also for young republicans; a republican youth weekend has been organised which is full of great events."
"I am sure that there will be a large contingent of republicans travelling from Newry & Armagh to the rally and anyone who is interested in attending the rally should contact the Newry Sinn Féin office (028 30261693) for details of travel arrangements." |
