Home heating oil theft on the rise - Curran

Published: 16 September, 2008

Sinn Féin Council Leader for Newry and Mourne Brendan Curran has advised people in Newry to be mindful of home heating oil thieves.

This follows an announcement by the PSNI in Newry that the theft of home heating oil is on the rise.

Mr. Curran said

"The theft of home heating oil seems to be the latest target of unscrupulous criminals. It has been reported in various locations across the North that this type of opportunist crime is on the increase. It would seem that these criminals operate by observing deliveries to homes and then return at an opportune time to steal the oil."

"With the cost of home heating oil at its highest price ever losing a full tank of oil is causing severe hardship with many families unable to afford to refill their tanks"

"I would call on people to be observant. If you see suspicious activity around a neighbour's house, particularly if there is no one at home, either record identifying markings and registration number of vehicles or call the police. Your house could be next."
