Downshire residents concern regarding plans for new superstore

Published: 21 September, 2008

Sinn Féin Councillor Charlie Casey has said there is concern among residents of the

Downshire Road

regarding plans to build a new superstore near

Downshire Court

.

Mr. Casey said,

"Some residents are concerned about the likely impact of such a proposal on that area. I recently met with some residents to see how exactly how it might affect them. Following that meeting I contacted the planning department in order to seek clarification on the application.

I also personally surveyed the residents of

Downshire Court

in order to get a full consensus on how people feel about the proposed development. The survey showed that most if not all residents were concerned about traffic impact. The likely affect if any on house prices and noise from heavy vehicles delivering at unsociable hours and background noise from refrigeration.

"Also a concern was the fact that that area is currently home to a large number of small indigenous companies/firms and they will all go to the wall if they are forced to re-locate at their own expense"

Councillor Casey also notified the Newry Chamber of Trade and Commerce who were not at that stage aware of the proposal. Cllr Casey concluded by saying that all the issues of concern to the residents of the area need to be addressed
