McCreesh Calls for an End to Illegal Dumping

Published: 21 September, 2008

Sinn Fein Councillor for the Fews, Jimmy McCreesh, has criticised those involved in the illegal dumping of toxic material at farmland in the Belleeks area last Friday. A local farmer came across 3-4 Cube containers abandoned on his premises on Saturday, of which several had leaked. The Farmer immediately alerted Cllr Mc Creesh and the Council following which a clean up has begun.

Cllr McCreesh said, 'Those people involved in this dumping have shown utter disregard for the environment and total disrespect to the owners of this land. To discard this toxic material on farmland puts this farmer's livestock and his livelihood at risk. These people should understand that the potential ramifications that this material could have on the environment if it found its way into a waterway would be massive. I find it shocking that people can show such carelessness and contempt for the local people's well-being and the environment in general.'

Cllr McCreesh concluded by welcoming the swift action from the council to clean up the area and as a result eliminate the potential hazards caused by the dump. He has also urged everyone in the local area to remain alert to such activities so that no similar incidents will occur that could have even more serious consequences.
