Councillors Welcome End of Long Battle

Published: 29 September, 2008

Sinn Féin Councillor Cathy Rafferty has expressed her delight at the decision by Roads Service to provide footpaths on the

Cathedral Road

.

Cathy said

"This has been an ongoing issue, going back 10 years to when my predecessor on the Council, Sean McGirr with the support of the local community and politicians including Councillors Noel Sheridan and Silvia McRoberts, first raised the need for footpaths to be placed on the Cathedral road after a young boy was badly injured crossing close to Daires Willows,"

"Sean was initially successful in his quest but this was put on hold until a decision was taken on the route for the new

Armagh North West Link Road

, now with the recent decision by Minister Conor Murphy finalising the route it will finally be addressed."

"Myself and my colleague Councillor Noel Sheridan have continued Sean's efforts and campaigned for the work to be carried out and now we can see the culmination with the first stage seeing the provision of a link from the existing footway at Cathedral Villas to the

Convent Road

junction. A further length is to be provided from the entrance to Glen Mhacha to the shops at Dukes Grove, with it planned to have both these sections completed within the current financial year" Cathy went on "I'm sure everyone who has occasion to walk the Cathedral Road will welcome this decision, it is a fantastic outcome to a long battle to make this road safer for pedestrians"
