Brendan Curran - Newry & Mourne District Council representing Newry Town
Brendan Curran has been involved in the Republican Movement since he was 15 years old. At 17 years of age he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by a non jury Diplock court. Brendan was a POW in Crumlin Rd. jail and Long Kesh Prison Camp from 1973 to 1980. Upon his release he immediately became active again in the Republican struggle and was elected as a Sinn Fein councillor to Newry and Mourne District Council in 1985. He has been re-elected every 4 years since. Brendan is Sinn Féin's Council Group Leader.
As a Sinn Féin activist Brendan was the subject of an exclusion order during the mid eighties and early nineties. He stood as Sinn Féin's candidate in several Westminster elections increasing the party's share of the vote each time.
In 1998 Brendan had the honour of being the first elected Sinn Féin Chairperson of Newry and Mourne District Council. He is a Sinn Féin Representative on many community groups and is the first ever Republican chairperson of the local District Policing Partnership.
